Thank you for your interest in taking part in the trial of the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) for cruise travellers.

All cruise travellers to New Zealand need to complete an arrival declaration. On your cruise, you will have the opportunity to complete your New Zealand arrival declaration digitally using the NZTD system.

The NZTD asks questions about your travel, including customs, immigration and biosecurity questions. It aims to improve the safety and security of New Zealand.

The NZTD is already available for travellers arriving into New Zealand by air and for some travellers by sea. Some cruise vessels have been invited to trial the system.

Completing your declaration

You can complete your digital NZTD by using the online form or by downloading the NZTD app.

You can submit your declaration 24 hours before you depart the last port on your way to New Zealand. The latest you can submit your digital declaration is by the time the vessel has berthed at its first port in New Zealand.

Using the NZTD app

  1. Connect to the internet and download the NZTD app. We suggest doing this before you start your voyage.
  2. Complete the first section of the app (privacy policy) while you are online.
  3. You can fill out the rest of your declaration while you are offline (on your voyage).
  4. Add your passport details either manually or scan your passport to auto-populate your information.
  5. You need to complete and submit your declaration by the time you reach your first port in New Zealand. You will need to be online to do this.

If you are travelling with children or need to complete the declaration for other people, the NZTD app will allow you to do this.

Using the NZTD online form

Alternatively, you can complete your declaration using the NZTD online form by visiting www.travellerdeclaration.govt.nz and selecting ‘Complete your declaration’. You will need access to your emails to do it this way.

Making changes to your digital declaration

Once you have started your declaration, you will be emailed a reference number that you can use to review, complete or make changes to your declaration. You will need to resubmit your declaration if you make any changes to it.

When you arrive in New Zealand

Your digital declaration is linked to your passport. It’s automatically checked when you arrive. If you are unable to complete a digital declaration, you can complete a paper declaration on arrival – you do not need to do both.

Paper declarations will be provided to you onboard your vessel for those who are unable to complete a digital declaration. This must be completed by the time you reach the first port of arrival in New Zealand.

If you are permanently disembarking in New Zealand (finishing your cruise in New Zealand)

If you are permanently disembarking in New Zealand and have completed a digital declaration, there is nothing further you need to do.

If you have completed a paper arrival declaration, you will need to hold onto this until the end of your journey in New Zealand where you will present your declaration to a border officer.

If you are transiting New Zealand (not finishing your cruise in New Zealand)

If you are transiting New Zealand and have completed a digital declaration, there is nothing further you need to do.

If you have completed a paper arrival declaration, your cruise operator will inform you when and where to submit your declaration to Customs.

You may be required to present to a border officer at any point in your journey in New Zealand.
